The Secret Crabbing Spot
My Secret Crabbing Spot is located in Southern Maryland near the end of Rt. 235, in St. Mary's County. The park sits right on the Chesapeake Bay and consists of two fresh water ponds that are situated about 30ft. from the Bay. These ponds usually have a stream that spills out into the Bay and the Crab go back and forth from the pond to the Bay.

And that's where I 'swoop-in' and put the "Scoop-Daddy" on them.

It's sort of your average Park. Picnic tables, Bar-B-Que grills.....

This is why I go there. The previous two years have been great...good size and lot's of them. This year wasn't so good.

Part of the reason it wasn't so good is that the ponds that I crab-in have been blocked in and flooded. See how the path ends right at the waters edge. It's because the short dock that extends out over the water has been under water since last spring. The normal little stream that usually runs from the ponds, into the Bay have been filled with sand from last winter.....So what did I do this Saturday?

This is where the stream usually runs. I crabbed for a while this Saturday but only got a few. So I thought if I could get the water from the pond to start draining into the Bay some of the crab would just float along with the flow. See the dead tree at the waters edge, and the stump to the left of it?

All I did was dig a narrow trench from the the pool of water in the last picture, out to the edge of the Bay. The trench was about 12" wide and 20' long. After 15 minutes this is what it looked like. After about an hour the little stream I made became a torrent...10' across, 3' deep with water flowing so fast that you couldn't even walk across it.

Before making the stream flow again this is how many I caught. After the stream started really flowing I just held my big Dipnet down in the fast flowing water and the crab would just get trapped in the net. The water was so fast the crab couldn't swim back out.

I ended up catching about 6 dozen by night-fall.
The remaining pictures are the rest from that trip.

So here ends not only my collection of pictures, but also ends and fine summer of going to the Beach every weekend and Crabbing when the weather wasn't good for swimming.

When I go to the Ocean to surf, I go to Indian River Inlet. Indian River is just south of Dewey and Rehobeth Beachs, and just north of Bethany Beach.
